The Sunsetting of 3G Networks by the End of 2021

With the announcement of the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) plan by the government, all 3G networks will be sunsetting at the end of 2021. What does "sunsetting" mean exactly? In a nutshell, "sunsetting" is when a network operator shuts down the required infrastructure to operate communication devices on a network's technology. So, from 2022 onwards, 3G networks would stop functioning in Malaysia and everyone will be using 4G and (eventually) 5G networks instead.

What does this mean for you?

By upgrading to 4G networks with the implementation of Voice over LTE (VoLTE), 4G speeds will become the norm now, which means a faster and smoother Internet connection for you, clearer voice calls, low latency, and a more wide-reaching cellular network.

How does this benefit you?

A fast and stable 4G or 5G Internet connection would open the path for companies to grow their services more innovatively. Regular users would be able to stream content like music or high-definition videos quickly. This is a digital transformation that would improve the economic prospects of the rakyat and the country's socio-economic prospects as well.

What actions should you take?

If you don't have a 4G-capable device at the moment, it is highly recommended that you get one now before the eventual closure of 3G networks. If you're using a non-certified device, you may not experience the best Internet services and you might encounter frequency interference. Therefore, it is advisable for everyone who doesn't have a 4G device to get one soon.
